Sheboygan had a professional basketball team that was part of the NBA for one season.
I wonder if they’d stuck around if they would have been like the Packers in terms of being a quirky small-town team, in which that atmosphere became part of the lure.

My sister lives in Illinois and has always been a Packer fan. She has had season tickets for the past 15 years and never misses a game.

Green Bay is the only NFL team that functions like a college team. Your question isn't too dissimilar to asking how a tiny town like Clemson, SC gets 85K for games. Or Iowa City, IA. Under normal circumstances a professional team would have been placed in Milwaukie. But since the Packers go way back to the beginning of pro football when it was basically a barnstorming circuit... They've managed to thrive there and the Milwaukie people were willing to drive up there as are others from the area. Just like they do at dear old State U no matter what size city State U is located in.

Keokuk is now the size of Reedsburg, Tomah or New Richmond
Pop Anson ran that Keokuk team (his home town). He went on to become the first NL player to amass, 3000 hits. He ran that team, the nucleus of which went on to become the Chicago NL team....Note also that the Chicago Bears were originally the Decatur Staylies.

Pro sports teams started out as local amateur clubs. We still refer to pro teams as "clubs."

The Packers were originally a club sponsored by one of the meat packing outfits in GB.

How does Apple sell so many products, there are only 57,000 people in Cupertino?

Seems like a hassle for an investment that can never give you any type of dividend/return.

I'm picturing a blue collar guy with a Packers Shrine in his basement with a certificate showing he owns ONE share prominently displayed in the basement.

Dude - It's not just "blue collar guys." I have been in multi-million dollar mansions in CA and FL that have "Packer Shrines" in the game room/TV room. The fan base is pretty rabid, large and extends way way beyond GB.

There are people here on West Coast who are die hard packer fans and have never stepped foot in WI, let alone GB.

Lot's of reasons for that.

They are a popular team nationally so I guess the market is not limited to the Green Bay area.

This link is interesting because it shows Google searches for teams. Scroll down for the NFL graph.

The fan base is all over the state and beyond. It is like a religion here. It isn't just in Green Bay.
