Hi Guys,

I'm looking to relocate to the Wisconsin/Minnesota border and I'm looking at places to settle. We've so far had some good advice from the Minnesota board regarding Stillwater/Mahtomedi. However, we would also like some information about towns over the Croix in Wisconsin.

My priorities are good schools, easy commute (I'm looking to get to Rice Street in Little Canada). I personally love older properties like Victorians and wonder are there any places you could recommend that would fulfill all our requirements??? Location Location Location too of course.

Thanks
Maz-

I liked Stillwater a lot when I lived in the twin cities and I think that would be a good choice. Another area that I though was interesting is the Hastings/Prescott area. They are old river towns and you might some Victorian homes in that area, the schools there are pretty decent. The commute from there to Little Canada is probably going to be touugh, I don't really know, it's been a long time since i lived in the twin cities.

I live in Hudson. It's a nice scenic area and about a 20 minute drive to St. Paul in good weather/traffic conditions. From Hudson to Rice Street in Little Canada would be about 30 minutes. There is a good mix of old and new homes in Hudson (older Victorians near the downtown area, and newer homes a mile or two east of downtown.

The school district is good, although they are beginning to see some overcrowding issues due to the growth in the area. A new elementary school will open in a year or two, which should solve the problem.

Housing costs are generally cheaper on the Wisconsin side, but WI property taxes are ridiculously high.

What's ridiculously high to you?

Currently I'm paying $7000 for a 2000 sq ft home

Wisconsin ranks #1 in property taxes as a percentage of your home value (1.82%) and #5 in property taxes as a percentage of income (4.79%). For what it's worth, Minnesota ranks #27 and #25 respectively.
