..... and yet tourism is one of Wisconsin's biggest industries, so it must not be boring to all the people who make a special trip to check out its offerings and spend lots of money to do it. Living in a place that doesn't interest you can wear on your psyche, but to then paint the entire state as boring is not fair.

Wisconsin may not have the best of everything, but has at least a little of something for just about everyone, from world-class arts to watching the corn grow to plenty of stuff in between; like fairs and festivals, hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, wineries, breweries, fine dining, junk-food dining, museums and galleries, nice golf courses, shopping, national forests, an excellent state park system, sports leagues both major and minor, zoos, Native American culture, casinos, well-preserved "Main Street America" towns dotting the state, water parks, even downhill skiing. And if that's just not enough, Chicago is only 40 miles past the state line.

It's easy to get bored where you live when you keep seeing and doing the same stuff over and over. And if it ain't your cuppa tea, fine. But if you find an entire state as big as Wisconsin boring, the problem is probably not the whole state, it's probably you.

Weren't you the one who posted this earlier: "Well that's part of your problem right there. Appleton is nice but it's small and of limited scope, while Green Bay is basically Bumf#*k in quasi-urban form."

Contradict much? The WI where I live is boring to me....Now, can we get back to the original post, instead of all of this back and forth?

We would like to move some place that has all 4 seasons but milder and shorter winters and longer springtimes; lower taxes, low crime, lots of shopping, things to do etc...you know, all the basics and just an all round nice place to live!

Thank you!

We're living in Franklin, TN (just south of Nashville)...it has all those things, we like it.

I miss a lot of things about WI too though. Listing them would be stupid probably as there would be a barrage of people who would disagree. I've lived in a lot of places in the world...they all have good points and bad points.

I love Franklin; especially the downtown area and historical houses.

No, it's not a contradiction to acknowledge that where you live specifically might not be that exciting without projecting your boredom on the entire state. If Wisconsin isn't your thing, fine; different strokes and all that. But to declare the WHOLE STATE boring, especially given the incredible breadth of recreational activities available in Wisconsin, IMO evinces an incredible lack of imagination. If you just gotta get out, start making plans to get out. But you might as well make the best of it in the meantime.

backtowi....you can have our house and our jobs if you want

Even though I can appreciate the positives that WI has to offer, I am so over WI... Yes, we have a great home and comfortable living, it's just too boring here and the winters are a nightmare! I was in a bad car accident in the winter time 5 years ago and I just hate driving here in the winter ever since. Plus, being stuck indoors for months and months on end...not fun.

People, though nice for the most part, lack a sense of curiosity about other states, countries...as long as the Packers are winning and the beer is flowing, people are happy here....not my cup of tea though.

Thanks again for your great posts! Keep them coming!
I understand...I have often resented my parents for deciding this is where my roots would be. I have lived other places than Madison, and have always had a yearning to travel more and find my perfect spot to reside. Hopefully someday the dream will become a reality. In my next life it will not be here. Keep in mind though that no matter where you go you will miss something from where you have just left! Good luck with your relocation.

People in the south, unlike Wisconsin, are not grudgeful. I think that's why they're happier. They're not touchy or self-righteous or judgemental either. You can "enjoy" people in the South, rather than having to "cope" with them.

like anywhere, there are plenty of judgmental, self righteous people in the south.

Not like there are in Wisconsin by a long shot. I love the friendliness of the South and people come over and ring your doorbell. It's the way life should be.

This is nonsense. Some of the cattiest people I've met were southerners. It only seems like they don't hold grudges because they're polite to each other's faces even if they hate each other, in the name of "southern manners." But the minute you're not face to face, they'll put a knife in your back if they don't like you.

While northern "manners" where people aren't automatically nice to each other seems alien to southerners, I'd rather people make it clear where they stand with each other (and it's possible to do so without being rude or abrasive about it) than to pretend to get along just for appearances.
