I don't believe in them, but would like your opinion. I read that recruiters have 6 seconds to scan a resume, so what's the point in trying to kiss but in some cover letter. I have awards showing I am a multi year president's club member for sales so I offer those instead or I get someone to write me a reco on linkedin.

Just make the cover letter very short and to the point. I tried that in July and it lead to a call back.

Just a paragraph would be fine.

I have been getting some callbacks and I don't use a formal cover letter. However, most of my contacts are via email so I do include a brief paragraph (only a few sentences) in the actual body of the email.

Yes, cover letter. It's considered standard protocol these days, and even if you submit to a recruiter who hates them and doesn't read them, not having it as part of your submission, just makes a person look lazy and really not that interested in the company- IMO-

It is standard. Cover letter. You want to personalize it and add in all the key words from the job description.

Default If you want the job....write a cover letter.

In this economy with over 100 people applying for 1 job, it's absolutely necessary to include a Cover Letter. It gives you a chance to bring up important points about yourself that your resume won't do, it allows you the opportunity to tell the employer what YOU can do for THEM, AND, it will help you stand out if you're looking for a career, and not just a job. (It's nothing for a large company to get over 300 applications, so the competition can be fierce!)

If they get 100 applicants, those with Cover Letters will stand out as being more interested, invested and eager. Taking the time to do this will send a message to the employer that they are worth your time.

Make your cover letter professional enough to show your 'communication' talents, but casual enough to show your personality. I may make the difference in you getting hired, which is the whole point, right? Bottom Line: Give them a reason to put your resume in the 'worth a second look' pile, and not the 'no way' pile. It's no guarantee, but well written cover letter certainly can't hurt.

Hope this helped.

Just my 2 cents,
Boof

Great post. Both cover letter and a resume must stand out within 15 seconds.

Yes, cover letter. I did a refresher course last year and the woman who ran the course was very updated about current protocols, etc.. (this was a large metro area) said yes.
