I applied for a job and got a call back for an interview. I went in for the interview and I left with a bad vibe. I just didn't think I would get the job. So, I didn't send a thank-you note. I didn't hear a word from them via email or mail for almost a month to tell me I didn't get the job. I checked my voice mail recently and low and behold they said they offered the job to someone else! Why reject someone via PHONE? What if I had of answered the phone???
So you would rather have received an impersonal, auto-generated email reply instead? A) Be happy you got an interview, and B) be thankful that they gave you a phone call to inform you that you weren't chosen. Considering you didn't even send them a thank you note, it's quite generous that they spent the time to call you. Many applicants go through much more than you did during the interview process and don't get so much as an email indicating they are out of the running.
They were professional and forthcoming. Most places you never hear anything back at all unless hired. Now you do not have to wonder and can proceed with full force at another opportunity.

Where I work they used to send out self addressed cards that you turned in with your application to state you didn't get the job. They stopped doing those cards and now you MIGHT get a call or letter stating you didn't get the job. Many times you get nada. I think the phone call was actually a nice thing to do.
I would have preferred a email or even a letter. In this case, nothing at all. I did said I didn't think I would get the job. He sounded skeptical to even interview me.
I just found it odd for him to take time to call me. Why not an email? Since that is more common these days or nothing. I have had HR send me reject letters. But never a phone call. WOuld you have liked to talk to a potential employer when he was rejecting YOU for a job? I would NOT!
You could email him and tell him how you feel. Then, he can get it right for future interviewees.
