A lot of people do, myself included. There are times when it's advantageous and even desirable to go the temp route. I've temped on occasion in the past to supplement income or when in transition between jobs, and am in the latter circumstance currently. "Thank you for not generalizing."
The OP should get off the passive-aggressive train and make one quick phone call to the agency to be rid of the problem people.
The only time it is advantageous to work for a temp agency is when you have no other choice and need an uncompetitive pay check while you look for a job with a company that pays competitively and offers benefits.
And I doubt they lied, the agencies today just send out a warm body.
That is their game: to find the cheapest warm body who might possibly suffice for a job at least temporarily, pay them as little as possible, and charge the client as high as possible.

That's when I've worked for temps. I felt had no other options and I needed a job. They treat you like garbage. If you have an advanced degree, some will tell you to lie about it so you can compete with the $12.00 high school drop outs. If you don't have a degree, they try to sell you as a paralegal (or similar ilk) willing to work for very low wages. They charge the company at least double your pay and put a clause in there which prevents the company from bringing you on board at a reasonable price if they want you.
To the OP:
You haven't made it clear what your relationship to them is.
Are you a supervisor? If not, let it go. They're temps and the cruddier they act, the less likely their contract will be renewed or brought on board as a permanent.
Are you payroll processing? Let them do their own math. When they overcharge your company for hours worked, you have great grounds for termination.

It seems to me you're taking this way too seriously and there may be other things going on in your life that have nothing to do with work. I can't think of any reason why a co-worker's mathematical/grammatical problems would cause a healthy person to not venture outside.
At my last position which was a big permatemp farm once it was clear to everyone that no matter how great or hard working they are they would never be made perm morale went into the toilet, the workers became disengaged, noone wanted to do more than the minimum.
If your place is like that it is no wonder. It is a bad way to run a business filling it with underpaid workers who don't like nor care about the business and hate their jobs. However, I guess for the MBA's if they can show they are saving some money using permatemps they get a big pat on the back when in fact they are destroying their work force and losing institutional knowledge. Typical short-term corporate thinking.

Unfortunately , I am not a supervisor , for if I were at least 70 percent of everyone here would have been terminated , or on final warning. I've spoken to their directs , who in turn , spoke to the aforementioned persons. My department is the proverbial 'fly on the wall' , but our accomplishments/queries have an unnerving tendency to fall upon deaf ears. Given my past experience making a call to any service provider , I'd likely be subjected to disciplinary action , if not terminated. Also , they have a tendency to allow for second , third , fourth chances for too many!! My reasoning for not venturing outside are multifaceted , and ill suited for discussion on a webpage , albeit I really appreciate the responses. The aforementioned person posited a 'heartfelt apology' , but I know this to be nothing more than a ruse , so they are on my red alert list. And what is this 'passive aggressive' drivel of which has been spoken? Had I requested a psychologist , I'd see one in person , not rely on someone who may or may not actually exist pretending to be one. Maybe morale is the lynchpin , they know their compense is subpar , and thus are complacent. Only time will tell. Thanks again to those who replied in logical , concise statements.

This is why temps rarely get hired perm any more. No business out there will be a $10,000 "finder's fee" for common job categories such as admins, paralegals, file clerks, etc. They could easily find these people on their own. They could place an ad and get 500 resumes faxed in the very next day. I have to explain to people all the time "your company isn't going to pay a fee to hire you perm because, to put it nicely, your job is very common and not that specialized".
Temp agencies and their clients also make it VERY difficult for the temp to go on interviews for permanent jobs. If you ask for an extra hour off work during the day, you are almost guaranteed to be replaced in your job very soon, or at the least, be interrogated about why you needed that hour off. Some agencies make you sign a document stating that you will only conduct job interviews after standard business hours (after 5 pm), which is pretty ridiculous.
