If you have the motivation and hustle, then there's a good chance you'll go far. But if you're the lazy type, life is going to be tough for the long run.
In the long run whatever you do...chase the cheese and compete fiercely against your peers to eat at a better restaraunt...or sit back and do just well enough and keep to yourself and your own hobbies all the while working on your inner self and finding inner peace....You will die the same. Don't ever let anyone else tell you what to strive for or tell you any thing bad about your life We are floating in space living in a consumer driven system that has brainwashed us since we were sent off to learn our training to be a part of the system set up by those to keep themselves at the top since 1st grade. Only one rule....try to be happy because very very soon none of us will be here and none of your status or money will make any difference. To quote metallica---sad but true.

Well said no point in being the richest man in the graveyard.
If you can pull it off, do it. You might have to be poor and have a lot related inconveniences in your life. Some people live off of a few thousands a year, live in a van, and travel the world. More power to them.
I'm in my late 20s and I still don't have a "career plan." I think that I just don't want a career, and that people in the United States put too much emphasis on their career in their lives.
I want to have a job I like, but I don't really care to have a career. I want to LIVE my life and not have it revolve around work.
Thoughts?
There's nothing at all wrong about the way you are thinking. However, I would suggest that you might check out areas to live that are WAY cheaper than Socal. If you live in a very low COL area, you won't need to work yourself to death just to pay the rent. Enjoy your life, there will always be time to be a wage slave later if you choose to.
BZZZT - wrong. I don't have a "career" - never did. I have a JOB. At which I can make pretty good money. I raised a son and was the only income for a lot of it (husband handled everything that's usually considered a "woman's job") and we lived quite well for some of those years! I was pulling down a LOT of money.
If you're a man, don't be mad that you can't find a good woman to marry you. And if you decide 10 years from now your priorities change, don't be mad at others your age who have it made.
No big deal. Lots of people feel that way. You can make good money in jobs that are mid-level. For example, some people who are Executive Assistants are making $65-$80,000 a year and have no desire to move up from that role. I never used to think of my job as a career either until recently when someone called me a "career administrative assistant."
I'm one of those people who works when I'm at work, but I do not want to work 50-60 hours a week. I consider my job a job and only do it because I need to pay the bills. If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't.
A guy I knew didn't want a 'career' but wanted a job that would provide benefits and would be indoors. He found a position in the 'mail room' of a large corporation and loved it! He didn't have a boss looking over his shoulder all day and enjoyed going around the building delivering mail to the departments - he wasn't trapped in the mail room all day.
He was probably one of the happiest, less stressed employees in the building.
Wow, I worked with the same guy! LOL Probably not, but very similar. He was the only guy in the mail room and it was a large corporate office. It was almost as if he was his own boss. Plus, he got to see everyone in the entire company and kind of got a workout walking around carting the mail around all day. He was great and seemed so happy all the time. Not sure what he made, but I did find out later that he was also a part-time mail carrier for the city he lived in.
