Is a BGS in humanities any better than just a high school diploma?

It all depends on what you learned from it. And what you do with what you learned.

Well, it opens up doors to jobs that require any type of bachelor's degree.

It allows you to apply for jobs where a generic bachelors is required. Basically anything other than fast food or retail junk jobs.

Most every degree is useless and a waste of money today and not worth pursuing for the long term with a few exceptions like Nursing, Medicine etc. But those jobs sound terrible to me. Being around death and sickness at all hours of the day? Sounds more like hell than employment.

Computer Science is a good deal now but probably won't be in the future. Engineering? Jobs are gone to India, Pakistan, China, wherever. All thats left are temp deals with no benefits.

Liberal Art degrees or BA's. Useless. Waste of money. You will ultimately end up doing a job that only requires a HS diploma

You're better off getting in the trades or some kind of federal employment

degrees do not "hold" someone back, they do it to themselves...
