Besides the gift cards, I think a card or note with specific appreciation to each would be awesome. People like to know their manager knows what they're doing for the team and is positively recognized for doing it.

unfortunately, I don't think you can edit your original post to include this info - but even as a mere bystander, I'm irritated by how many responses are ignoring it! lol!

Alcohol is a terrible gift for employees. You don't know what they drink, if they drink, or even if they have a drinking problem.

This is a perfect idea. The gift card will be greatly appreciated but the personalized note will really be a big hit. OP, I suggest an Amazon gift card so that the recipient is not restricted on what to buy with it.

My husband has a direct report that loves a particular restaurant. He asked me what I thought about him getting her a giftcard for that restaurant. I said "For how much?" He said "$25". I said "Well, it's likely that she would take someone with her to this restaurant, and their bill will certainly add up to more than $25 so there is the potential for your thoughtful gift to actually cost your employee money to use."

He went with a generic Visa giftcard.

Frankly, I feel that your intentions are good. But if this act even "Slightly" makes you financially hurt, you should NOT do it. There's going to be many other chances to "Reward" the employees, but if the company ain't doing it, I really see little value beyond a card being sent.

Plus as others have said "You do it once, they may come to expect it always"

It might be better to buy the GROUP a catered delivered party lunch with veggie and non-veggie options. Of course there may be someone with that unknown life threatening allergy, but with some variety in finger food it may satisfy everyone. A social time away from the desk would please most folks.

I agree about the favoritism! I'd stick to gift cards!

Well, then, be sure you tell him of your wish, and be sure several female employees are within hearing distance. That way you will have a witness or two overhearing your request to your boss so you have proof you asked him when said boss denies you did.
