Tis the season to be firing people.. sorry.. laying off people.. Another "Family Own" company just come in and told people to pack up and close up shop. No warning, notice or anything. So much for being a "Family Business". So what is worst? Getting laid off by a local so call family business or corp world? And if you knew your business was not going to make it in advance, why not say something then?
Are you kidding? Why would a business owner even put that out there into the universe? Nobody wants their business to fail.
Just go get your unemployment and move on. It doesn't matter whether you got laid off by a family-owned company or a corporation, it's the same money.
Its not for me.. its just others out their got no notice.. You would figure being a family business they would be family respectful. Not come in to a place and tell people to pack up 2 weeks before the only holiday family is first. I guess to some its just another holiday, or typical business ethics.. Much like you want a person to provide 2 weeks notice much as possible, but you want to just show up and lock the doors and give no notice to their employee? One way street?

There are many reasons for the business to keep quiet, whether a large corporation or a Mom & Pop. Still, any employee is going to have at least some indication that the company is failing, whether it's late notices or calls from suppliers, pay checks bouncing, or just lack of customers. They should start looking for a new job at the fist sign of problems.

Do you think it was that easy for them? Closing a business is one of the hardest things a company can do. They could have started letting one or two of you go during the year, but instead they tried their best to make it work with all of you.

It depends on what kind of field you are in. We own an HVAC business. We have never laid off workers at Christmas. We lay off in the spring and fall when people open their windows.
At least now, there's plenty of retail jobs you can get, right?
I don't think there's any worst between the two because you are ultimately losing your job, so it doesn't matter if they tell you right on spot or give you advance notice.

It's not "Always" around the Holiday season. It may "Seem" like it, but many reports of closings are not always reported, it's cyclical on the economy and various factors.
And frankly, I really doubt they are concerned how they look shutting down. Many of the owners aren't happy with having to let people go, shut down a company they started by themselves and nurtured to only see it die. They're more depressed for having not succeeded....
