I have worked across from this person for the last 6 years or so! that's what makes it so funny. And it couldn't have been just grabbing it off a christmas tree cuz they forgot. We work in the MAJOR shopping area of Manhattan! There's like 10 duane reade's within a couple of blocks radius. At our office holiday party next week we're supposed to reveal to each other who was who's secret santa. This person never attends the holiday party though anyway. I personally don't like office holiday parties either, but we do it more for our clients now than for us so it's not as fun. I used to stay the whole time for years and now I try to escape as fast as possible. but Secret Santa... always my favorite (and often only gift I get) gift that I look forward to. I'm not really upset, it's kinda funny when you think about it.

. Maybe that person really couldn't afford it, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt....

Well is it a good candy cane flavor?

Totally not the case, at ALL. trust me on this. When someone spends like 20 bux a day ordering in lunch... nah!

Then he/she shouldn't have participated if they could only afford a $2 gift. The OP said it was a $20 secret Santa.

I'm sure all the people you've been doing this with over the years enjoy it. Try not to let this one odd experience ruin your annual Secret Santa participation.

It seems early to receive a SS gift, at least the real gift. Are you sure this wasn't just the first of a several little things before the real gift? Or maybe from someone (a man?) who just has no idea how to choose appropriate gifts. I've know several like this.

Men give the best gifts, so not sure why you need to bring gender into it. no, it was the real gift, and I am totally over it. I think just expressing my confusion and sadness (wtf?) about it has helped. Also I have to remember that it's not shocking that a candy cane could cost 20 bux here.

Very rude, selfish & tacky. Some people are very selfish, they only join these gift exchanges to get gifts, & do not want to spend the money or the time on buying an appropriate gift. I hope they are not allowed to participate next year, or else make the rules clear, max spend & also minimum spend.
