I personally, am NOT ok with spending tax payer money on any further official interaction with this guy, especially NOT a year in jail.
And yes, when he was a child, it was acceptable for men to do that. I'm younger than he is, and it was acceptable for men to do that when I was a child. Nice men didn't do it, but it was no less acceptable than, say, hawking up a lougie and spitting it into the grass while watching a soccer game.
Waitresses and in first class, stewardesses, had to put up with that kind of thing although it was considered very caddish. I remember specifically being about 12 and a patron pinched a pretty stewardess (which is what they were called at the time) fairly hard on the butt, and she startled and then quickly rearranged her face to like an "oh yooouuuu" smile, and walked away.
Cads. But this is NOT worth time in our court system. I'd say the waitress should have picked up a tall glass of icewater and dumped it in his lap, and we're done.

These days, individuals, companies and law enforcement are all vying for a top place among who's who in combating sexual harassment, no matter how minute it is. This is just a byproduct of that trend.

I do get that.
But in this case, the police are complicit in this madness.
For all you people saying no it's never been acceptable, I take it you never went to a bar, or a low end breakfast place after a night out, back in the seventies or eighties? Let me assure you that it was hardly unheard of. As a high school/college kid at some of my first jobs, this was SOP for a lot of these places.
That people got away with it more readily then doesn't mean it was considered acceptable. It was still considered an ******* move.

Police? Look at all the posters in this thread. Vast majority are tripping over each other in rushing to condemn this "travesty" of an incident well deserving of national attention and outrage.

A slap on the butt deserves a slap back on the face, not criminal charges. And no I'm not condoning slapping a stranger's butt, no matter how juicy it looks. I'm just saying the punishment should fit the offense.
If he'd slapped her, say, in the face, it'd obviously be assault. So why should he get a pass for slapping her on the ass? How does adding a sexual component to the slap make it LESS of an assault?

If he had punched her and hurt her, that's one thing.
This is just . . . over the edge. Deserves a quick response from her, or another employee, and move on with important stuff of the day.

Who said anything about a pass? I just don't think the law has to get involved. A slap in the face, a drink poured on him, heck maybe even a swift kick in the nards. All will make him think twice about doing it again. Plus he was kicked out of the restaurant, which probably wouldn't have happened 20 years ago.
But then again I think there are a lot of minor offenses that would be better handled with a good smack upside the head rather than getting the government involved.

Ok, yes, it was considered classless, but it wasn't condemned and people weren't shocked and outraged by it the way they are now. The thought of it being considered assault would have been laughed to the moon and back.
