Has anyone ever or know anyone who has been turned down for a job because they have bad credit? Let's say you have good experience, excellent references, and no criminal history, but you have bad credit..

I've heard of it in rare circumstances where it had legitimate bearing bearing on the job. I think it's unfair for someone to be denied a job for reasons of credit where it has nothing to do with the job, but it would be the employer's right to do so provided it applies the standard consistently.

Not in a regular circumstance.

I know of someone whose gov't security clearance wasn't renewed (at the usual 5-yr renewal) when it was discovered that he owed back taxes. But this was someone who was responsible for the accounting of an entire agency.

Not your regular run-of-the-mill worker, and not a regular credit check either.

Agree with it or not, whole person concept. Credit history is a direct result of a person's responsibility, accountable and discipline with very few exceptions such as one's identity getting stolen.

It's a "debit" or "con" to most employers, simply means one needs to make up for it with something else.

The good news is to my understanding they won't run the credit check until you're pretty much hired. Generally I wouldn't mention it during one's first interview...Generally they'll tell you they're about to perform a background check and that's when you tell them the truth.

I remember a old poster saying that they only look for major stuff like bankruptcy

Not things like late credit card payments or medical debt

There was an article 6 months ago on yahoo, I searched and can't find it, that said employers ARE MORE LIKELY TO GIVE A "PASS" (<---key phrase) for bankruptcy during than currently having accounts in collections.

Irregardless, the moral of the story is if you have bad credit try and come up with valid reasons of medical problems, lay offs, house underwater/relocation, divorce, or kids tuition story...VS taking seven too many vacations...

For some jobs involving DoD or DoE work, you must pass a rigorous background check and get security clearance before you are allowed to work in this jobs. One part of the background check process is to verify that you are not under severe financial pressure (to lessen the likelihood that you might exchange classified information for financial gain). I imagine that your credit score would be a routine part of that check.

True and false...

Majority of DoD jobs require you to "pass" DoD knowledge, skills and abiltiies (ksa's)...The short, if you want to work under uncle buy a book and go from there

ALL government agencies require background checks that are more rigorous than most private sector employers. And they get more rigorous the more you get paid and the more responsibility you have. But there is no one rule that can be applied to every agency and every job, as to what will pass muster and what won't. Some people with significant debt and even arrest records can get jobs with the government.

I was trying to keep it short and pushed the "macro" level of getting a book if one seeks federal employment. You bring a lot of info and rep to you...
