As a former Business owner, times have sure changed in the world of cut throat employment.
Can someone tell me what in the h@ll a "Credit Check" has to do with a person being qualified for employment?
Maybe for those who HobNob and JetSet, but people like that wouldn't be on here asking logical questions, they'd be out flingin' money around try to get the highest position possible.

Seems like Pinoccio has come to life.

It's a requirement for all jobs I apply for, but that is due to clearances and such. My financial history is a concern since they want to know if I could be black mailed into giving out information. As is my background, which follows the same thinking.

They want to know how trust worthy I am and what if anything anyone could hold over me.

My life is an open book to them and has been for over 15 years now, so you know my life must be very boring....lol.

With employers able to search your credit, a person could easily
be blackmailed by that employer, "Either do this or I'll ruin your credit".

It's an "Invasion of Privacy "

I hate it but some do it...not as many as do reference checks but I have to sign a waiver alot for it. I could see where it gives you an indication regarding someone's reliability or habits but to simply not hire someone for this only when they have excellent references I think should be re-evaluated legally.

Waivers, any waiver, is null and void. Just a piece of paper.
When some has you sign a waiver, that means that what ever the waiver is referring to, is also not knowingly, or completely legal and there's a good possiblity that person could get their a$$ sued for everything they have.

There is a lot of interest these days in people's credit. I think with all the foreclosures , and desperate people looking for 'stop gap loans", the credit agency's have a lot of info on you , and , its an easy way to check you out, even if you are not wanting a loan.
Note; Every time someone check on your credit , your rating will go down, and , often for no reason. Loan companies are getting very tough about lending. Unless you work for a large Corporation, forget about getting a loan , for a big expenditure, like a house. car loans are still easy , but that is another story. We are becoming a cash society, a lot of folks are going underground , and , or using the barter system. Self employed people are a thing of the past, when applying for a loan. I have a friend , thats worth millions , and , he can't get a home loan , because he is self employed.

I don't think it's legal. The only way they can check is when your credit card co, or one of the big 3 sells your credit information....It's a money magnet.

The way I see it is some employers try to hard to find the perfect person for the job. I'm not saying you don't try to find the best fit possible, if I were running a business I'd certainly want trustworthy and reliable people working for me also, so I'm not disputing that part. What I'm disputing is something like a credit check for example seems to be just another way to find the perfect person for the job, a person with perfect credit, perfect references, perfect work history, etc.

They can find this person, but there is still no guarantee that person won't quit without giving notice because they don't like the job or have to move away unexpectedly, there is also no guarantee that the so called perfect person won't steal things from the company or anything else that's wrong or possibly illegal.

I'm in favor of reference checks, certain background checks, fingerprints if your working around children, etc., but a credit check just seems unnecessary to me.
