The New Mexico accents are definitely non-standard. Most people in New Mexico with a General American accent don't go back more than a couple generations.

I think when people think of SW US they think mostly of California, where the accent is quite close to the Canadian anglo accent.

California isn't in the SW US, the SW is Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.

Oh the dangers of drawing straight lines on a map. To really be accurate, California is in more than one region. Southern California is the southwest (Imperial Beach is the most southwest city in the lower 48 after all). Northern California could be part of the northwest.

I do agree with Acajak about the accents being close as California's accent is derived from the north-midland accent.

Here is an example from a CBC Radio program. The guy is a university professor in Utah. Not sure if he's from there - but he's definitely not Canadian as the CBC would have said so.


You would have to be really attentive and search long and hard to find cues that this guy is not Canadian (if you suspected he was or was not).

Well, California includes all of the *most* southwestern part of the continental United States, so...
