OK, I found the tiny tiny one-point type word Maps Labs and clicked it and clicked enable and saved it. Now what do I do? Nothing happens.

How can Google screw up so many things without ever, even by accident, get anything right.

Much much easier to use http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

I am 20.8009 miles from salt water.

After you do this, you should see a little "measurement" tool just to the left of the scale bar on the map you're looking at. It looks like a ruler held vertically. Click that tool then click two points on the map.

Closest I've ever lived in the past was 135 meters, in Chile, with an unobstructed view, at an elevation of 65 meters..

In California, 400 meters, also unobstructed view.
