Canadians often overestimate how kind they are, but this only goes to show how valued and admired a human quality kindness is here. Definitely not a negative.
Have you ever opened the door for a woman only to have her strut past you like a supermodel? Have you ever been made fun of by a friend because you apologized for stepping on someone's foot? Have you ever been taken advantage of because you offered help beyond what was required of you?
I've read that kindness shouldn't be displayed overtly in some countries because the culture is to get ahead at all costs. Anyone extending a helping hand would almost definitely be trampled on.
So, is being kind in your country similar to being a walking target board?
Most of people here is courteous and helpful, but it's not a rule.
Yep, even though people here in America get a bad rept for being rude, however this might be some of the few countries where you walk down the street and people say "good morning" "how do you do", people just start talking to strangers here
Weird. If I tried in Sydney people would look at me perplexed at my unusual and nutty behaviour. In Sydney the rule is walk fast and ignore everyone around you. Talking to strangers is if anything, considered a bit rude.

I thought that custom died in the 70s?

No, that's normal behaviour here. A quick 'excuse me'.

No, but I have been made fun of for offering help to someone who looked in need... by the person who was in need!

Not at all. Kindness is not seen as a weakness in Australia. It is a culture where it is expected that you will be humble and will never attempt to raise yourself above your fellow man. Australia is about egalitarianism, as the country started as a prison colony there has always be a mistrust of anyone who acts above and superior to their fellow man.
Though it may be seen as a weakness to fail to be direct and honest, genuine concern for others is always expected.
Depends. In some countries for instance men are friendly to women, but rude or even aggressive towards each other, especially when younger, like up to 30 or so.
