I lived in France for a year as a child and went to a private school. The private school provided school buses for all children to come to school from different parts of city. If I recall correctly there were 3 different routes and my ride was about an hour in each direction. I don't remember what color was the school bus.
Those buses are not the norm though we do have school buses but they're mainly for private or special schools. Some schools that are extra busy have allocated bus routes.

They are the norm in many areas of the UK, it just depends on the LEA and what contract they have with a particular transport company. The yellow buses also being run by private companies, as there are no state bus companies in the UK.
Quite a few British bus operators such as First Student UK run yellow buses, whilst British Company FirstGroup also run a lot of US School bus services.
They don't usually use them for longer trips. For intercity school trips more than an hour or so they would use motorcoaches in most places.
But at least you would think they'd fit them with seat belts and make them structurally safer. It seems a bit of a contradiction that American parents make their children wear helmets to walk to the corner yet they're OK with them travelling in buses that are deathtraps by today's standards...
We do not have school buses in the Netherlands to my knowledge. Small children are taken to school by their parents (on foot, by bike or by car). Older children usually go to school on foot or by bike, depending on how far away the school is. I grew up in a rural area and I knew plenty of kids in high school that had to cycle over an hour to get to school.
There is a taxi service for children with disabilities who go to a special school, since these schools are often too far away to get there by bike. But this is of course rather different than regular school buses.
