If you could think of a country that would be "hell on earth", what country would that be?

At the current moment, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, South Sudan and Afghanistan.

The country I regard as 'hell on earth', if you were to exclude war is probably Saudi Arabia.

not such thing, happiness is relative... right now I am in the middle of nowhere and I am the happiest I've been in a while

Everything is relative.

It's probably not that bad to live in North Korea if you are a high rank government employee who lives in a big house in the best neighborhood of Pyongyang and drives a nice Japanese car.

Being a rich businessman in Kabul is probably not that bad too... You can surely have as much water as you want...

Belarus, Uzbekistan, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China should be replaced by Guinee, Sierra Leone, Niger, Central African Republic, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The answer to that question would vary almost weekly, depending on which one had current ongoing political upheavals of a para-military nature. Some of those on the list were very nice countries to live in, as long as the times were not troubled. Like Syria and Venezuela which had decent economies and civil order.

After experiencing difficult times in the recent past, Angola and Ethiopia are today among the most promising developing countries to live in, and for the citizens, perfectly orderly and economically developing. There is absolutely no reason in the world for Vietnam to be on anybody's list of countries in which life is unpleasant.

A "Freedom Index" is of very little validity for measuring a quality of life, because there are so many other factors that reflect on quality of life. Further, ordinary people don't really care much about "economic freedom" unless they are wealthy enough to want or need to invest their money in a productive way. And "Freedom of the Press" is pretty meaningless to people who are not engaged in revolutionary activity. Those are simply non-starters in the lives of ordinary working stiffs, who can find many other ways to gauge their quality of life.
