Oh yes, I forgot about the fake fireworks! China must have felt they had something to prove to the rest of the world but couldn't do it without faking it...

(OMG - agreeing with Irene - what is the world coming to!! )

I understand it has to do with their lack of money, but if that was the case, and if their public was so unenthusiastic, then why bid on the games? I am spoiled by Beijing's performance. The Chinese national character is very different from Brazil and so that's what's the difference. Beijing was finished with its construction and preparations almost half a year ahead of schedule, while Brazil couldn't follow any schedule and the athletes were left with blocked toilets, broken sinks and Hotel 66 level dorm rooms.
Depends on what impresses you I guess. Nothing to do with "lack of enthusiasm" - what a ridiculous thing to say. You have no idea how enthusiastic were the Chinese, as they were tiny specks in a giant mass doing EXACTLY what they were told to. Individual expression doesn't get you far there.

The fact that the Chinese saw fit to have a cute girl mime to the opening song because the actual singer was deemed insufficiently telegenic - and that the lad who stood up in London to sing "Jerusalem" before 60,000 in the stadium and a billion TV viewers had a deformed arm - tells you all you need to know about the respective societies.

Brazil certainly has its problems (as does the UK) but I would live in either of those countries a thousand times over PRC.

The opening ceremony in Rio was an artistic masterpiece.

The only negative part was the bad choice of the song to be singed by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Anitta at the same time when the drums of all "samba schools" of Rio were performing together in the center of the field. The song "Isto Aqui, O Que É?" is not very appropriated for singing together with that sea of drums. It sounded a little weird together with that so many drums.

And that's one of the things that turns me off about Chinese culture they're sheep.

It certainly speaks volumes to me.

Huh? Discussing the opening ceremony?

Am I the only one who thinks all of them are crap? They bore me to death, kind of feel they are a bit outdated for the sake of the 21st century… all these huge choreographies, with thousands of people dancing and running around gigantic stages, light shows and a couple of seemingly popular musicians making an appearance, are stuff we’ve all seen tons of times, and in the context of the current state of the art and technology, they no longer provide amazement, and look tasteless to me. Even though the acts may be perfectly crafted, they end up being repetitive, lackluster and forgettable. I don’t even remember the ceremonies of Beijing and London.

Curiously, the only opening ceremony I remember pretty well is the one of FIFA World Cup France 1998, with the freaking giant robots. It was boring as hell and anticlimactic beyond any comparison, yet it managed to be memorable, perhaps because it was weird and unique. I guess it failed miserably, but ultimately it was a good try. The fact that most remember it is something to value...

I found the toned down special effects and pyrotechnics to be a bit refreshing over the recent spectacles and well done. also liked the idea of the athletes milling about after they paraded in much better than a regimented mustering seen in the past. Hope all continues to go well the rest of the way, unlike some on here that would take glee in pointing out any missteps that occur.

Give me a break. In Chinese culture, there is nothing wrong with doing what ones good at. If you sing, great and if you look good then that's great too. I guess all that history presented with exquisite beauty in Beijing is way over your head. Oh, sorry I didn't know you like simple things like little groups dancing on stage. Too bad. Yeah, stick to the staid British taste and the filth of rio. Everything from broken plumbing to poison water to dire poverty and crime to corrupt judging in boxing where referees are bought off....just a wonderful games so far. Give me a break.

And nobody cares where you'd like to live. But thanks for playing!

Yeah China wanted to put a good show there, and in fact most Chinese people do not approve such an arrangement. So you can make such a big claim out of one event... it pretty much proves your level of knowledge and intelligence. Stay away from China please.
