It does sound like you only passed through without enough time to capture the essence of London. It is expensive, overly so and not the city it was thirty odd plus years ago when was the world centre of street fashion and a place for all types eccentrics could generally feel free.
Still London remains a world city, overly reliant on the finance industry for my liking these days which has changed the city no end. More sterility, places that were once happening have gone back as the rich have colonised localities decades ago where average earners could reside or overseas investors with no interest in renting, just parking money. All has led to a decline in London from my perspective, but still a great worldly city that is just more difficult to live in, although never exactly an easy place.

You said it is very sterile. Too many bankers, too little colour.
If I'm filthy rich, I can definitely see myself living in NYC, Tokyo, LA or SF(Have already lived or visited multiple times all of these four cities) with NYC and Tokyo being my top two favorite cities.
Can’t comment on London because I have never visited there. I definitely look forward to visit there in the near future.

London is full of the most beautiful garden squares, parks and trees, and the leafy lanes of places such as Hampstead, Highgate, Richmond etc, as well as the beautiful Nash terraces and Holland Park mansion attract a lot of rich people.
As for the weather I recall American travel; witer Bill Bryson, citing English weather as perfect with it's cool summers and mild winters, compared to the extremes of weather in other parts of the world. The country also enjoys four proper seasons of weather, whilst as already pointed out if you want to head for the South of France and mediterranean just hope on a train or plane, as in terms of distance, it's not that far by US standards.
Even if you are not rich, you can still. afford £20 return flight to Nice, which invokves a couple of hours on a plane.
You bought a Yacht, have supercars worth 500 000 euros, buy a Breguet worth 100k like we go buy a TV screen. You have a villa you go to 2 months a year, 5 hours by your private Falcon, but you pay 30 people to maintain it **** and span all year long so any day you come and it's ready (same for yacht crew)...
Stuffs like that
Oh damn, I'd definitely go NYC and then buy more mass transit for the city and region.
