I'd love to hear folks' thoughts on the nebulous term "The West" or "Western World"? Who do you consider to be part of it? Is it a proxy for White? for Christian? For democracies?
Below are different regional groupings that could qualify under various broad definitions. Please vote for those you think ARE Western. If there is a particular country/region missing, please comment on it.
• Anglo America: Canada and USA
• Australia and New Zealand
• Europe – Eastern Europe and the Balkans (excl. former USSR)
• Europe – Northern Europe, incl. Germany and the United Kingdom
• Europe – Southern Europe, incl. France, Greece, Italy, and Space
• Europe – Former Soviet Union, incl. Russia and Ukraine

• Japan
• Latin America - Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay
• Latin America – Brazil
• Latin America – Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela
• Latin America – Mexico, Central America, and Spanish Caribbean

Japan is a developed modernized ASIAN country because it's located IN ASIA. What on earth have you been smoking?
I really don't understand those who include JAPAN in the West and exclude Latin America.
The West is a cultural concept and opposes the East, it's not the same as developed economies!

"The West" is a proxy for Europe and European-influenced, as "The East" is for Asia, though we have to keep in mind the strong difference between "Middle East" and "Far East", which are culturally distinct of each other as both are from the West.
Therefore, all the European-influenced countries - i.e. Christian and speakers of indo-european or uralic languages - could be grouped in the West. That includes all the Americas (north and south), Australia, NZ, and I go even further: most of subsaharian Africa should be considered Western as well, because they fit this definition.
Russia is also a Western country: most of its population is in the European part, it's mostly Christian (both religious and culturally), speaks officialy and overwhelmingly an indo-european language. And more than this, the art, music and classical literature of Russia are remarkedly Western. What prevents it to be considered fully as "Western" is only geopolitics, which change from times to times. They are in an analogue situation of Japan, which is an ally of Europe and USA but it's an Eastern country; and more than this, one of the quintessential eastern countries.
I really don't understand those who include JAPAN in the West and exclude Latin America.
They are clueless, and forget about Latin America, which is a clear subset within the Western culture. If you had to make a list of countries which definitely don’t belong to the West, Japan is one of the best examples: non-Abrahamic background, a unique writing system, long time of isolation that brought a set of unique traditions and customs, etc.
Economy eliminates Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Values eliminate all authoritarian governments.
Economy and government changes from times to times.
How about Poland, Estonia, Czechia? 30 years ago they were not western but now they are, according to your concept. Same for Italy, Germany, Portugal and Spain 80 years ago. And how about Israel, which is culturally distinct of both Europe and Anglosphere?
