What is the logic behind calling some coutries as third world country. Civilisation in Egypt, China, India etc is older than civilisation in US. How come they become third world country not first or second?

First world countries were those where American theories of Democracy and Capitalism held sway - U.S., Western Europe, Australia, Japan.
Second world countries were those where those where the Soviet theory of Communism ruled - USSR, China, Cuba, Vietnam.
Third world countries were the unaligned nations, generally theocracies, monarchies, or other "old world" system of governance.

Is that pretty much text book? I thought it would be more socioeconomic.

There must be more to the definition. India is the world's biggest democracy.
Here's the complete dictionary listing:
1.the underdeveloped nations of the world, esp. those with widespread poverty. 2.the group of developing nations, esp. of Asia and Africa, that do not align themselves with the policies of either the U.S. or the former Soviet Union. 3.the minority groups within a nation or predominant culture.

That was the definition established during the Cold War.
Now the term has been used to mean developing nations, but its origins are political, not economic (of course, politics being tied to economics...)

using the 3rd 2nd 1st world countries isn't really a good description. A better one is Developed, Developing, Undeveloped. Mostly based on idustrialization and quality of life, along with rural vs urban populations.

disagree
of those countries you mentioned, only india is close to being a third world country. china is very modern and nice, and so is egypt to an extent. third world countries would be places like Chad, Afganistan, Mynamar, Boston (just joking).

In some cases, the people who made them great are now extinct for all purposes, as they intermarried with other populations.
