(it can actually affect what you're doing)

here's a recent example:

I'd been at a local ER. later, the nurse called and said: "You should come in for another x-ray."

to me, "come in" refers to where the speaker is speaking from.
here, it does not.
when I went there, they were surprised to see me, & said I was supposed to go to my own dr. for the x-ray.
so, I wasted a few hours of the day because I didn't translate their mangled vocabulary... there is a difference...

I suppose when somebody knocks on her door, she says "Come in" when she means "Go away."

Besides air traffic control, I cannot imagine a place where precision of language is more vital. A word with her supervisor might be in order.

If it's any consolation I would have done exactly as you did - went in TO the ER. Was/is there really any other way to take that sentence? (rhetorical question laced with sarcasm at the nurse, LOL)
