Why can't people just say, "yes", instead of "absolutely"?

Emphasis or enthusiasm. I say it.

The correct word in this context is "rein" (as in the reins that control a horse) not "reign" (as in a king who reigns over his country).

I say yes because in my college math class I once thoughtlessly responded, "absolutely" to a question the professor asked. I had to sit shrinking in my chair to a lengthy lecture on using that word in place of a simple yes.

To the use of free-reign rather than free-rein.... I don't think free-reign makes sense and while the other goes back to horse and buggy days, it's still giving someone carte blanche.

Maybe he/she thought you were making fun - by obliquely referring to an absolute number. Yeah, you never know with math profs - they often go off on a tangent ...

No, he knew I wasn't making fun. No fun allowed in that class... lol Which is NOT to say he didn't have fun... he once filled the board with calculations, filled every square inch. Then turned, facing the class to announce everything he'd written was how NOT to do it. He gave quizzes every Friday over material we'd never covered. My favorite score on one of those was a big zero +. He'd circled a small area done correctly.
