That's a good one, Niftybergin, but in this thread an explanation of what is proper is preaching to the choir.
My explanation was more of a rant directed at the people who DON'T get it, rather than the educated folks on this board who surely know the difference between bawl and ball. I was just using you all as my unwitting -- if you'll pardon the expression -- audience.
The book is set in the late 1700s. One of the characters -- the younger brother of an English duke, a lieutenant in the British army, and an "intelligencer" -- is a closeted homosexual. Homosexuality, of course, was a capital crime at that time. At the end of the book, it's revealed that another character (distinctly nefarious in nature) is aware of John's orientation and is threatening to expose him. The book ended shortly after that revelation, so we won't know for another 4 or 5 years what happens to John.
One of the fans was oh-no-ing about John's fate and expressed her concern that he'd be captured and hung. I had to snort. John very well may be hanged (although I personally doubt it); however, the book has not yet revealed whether or not he is, in fact, hung.
The literal pmsl. That could be annoying. Incessant pmsl would be even more so. We don't need no Yellow River in a theater.
The trusty Urban Dictionary saves me again!
