Looks like this is the big slushy snow storm of spring.
This Winter Storm Watch was just posted this afternoon...

--------------------------------------------------------
Statement as of 3:20 PM MDT on April 30, 2008

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Thursday morning through
Friday morning...

The National Weather Service in Billings has issued a Winter
Storm Watch... which is in effect from Thursday morning through
Friday morning.

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches will be possible by
Friday morning. Heaviest amounts will be over the higher terrain
in southern Big Horn County and the foothills near the Big Horn
Mountains. In addition to the snow... strong northwest winds of 20
to 35 mph may produce significant areas of blowing and drifting
snow. Area roads may become quite slushy with low visibility due
to the blowing snow.

Rain and snow is expected to develop by Thursday afternoon and
change over to snow in the evening. The snow will then continue
through Friday morning and may be heavy at times Thursday
afternoon and night.

A Winter Storm Watch is issued when severe winter weather is
possible but not imminent. At this time there is a potential for
significant snow accumulations and reduced visibilities. The
exact path and strength of this storm remains uncertain. Please
monitor the latest forecasts for updates. Ranchers and farmers
with Young livestock should prepare for the much cooler and
unsettled weather.

You ain't seen nothing yet. hahahaha

Back in 73 I was up at Seebly and got snowed in. Missed a day of work. It was the 4th of July weekend. About 10 inches of snow, but I had common tread tires and couldn't move. Just through a couple more logs on the fire, caught some more trout, kicked back and relaxed. What else can you do?

My husband works with a guy who has lived here since the early 70's.. and he was telling my husband the other day about a storm in 1983 that blew through in May that killed 90% of the livestock in this area, because it snowed so much it filled in all the dips where the cattle and animals usually go and hide to let the snow blow past and above them, and they got buried alive cause it filled and piled up so fast...

BTW, I want to thank Elkhunter for the Red Neck Road map - most excellent addition. It is fun doing the visual walk around!

Here is the latest for anyone curious... got upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning now.... but lowered the snowfall totals a few inches..
------------------------------------------------
Statement as of 9:52 AM MDT on May 01, 2008

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon
MDT Friday...

The National Weather Service in Billings has issued a Winter
Storm Warning... which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon
MDT Friday.

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches will be possible by
Friday morning. The heaviest snowfall will be confined to the
higher elevations around Sheridan. Snow is expected to move into
the area this evening and become heavy at times tonight. In
addition to the snow... strong northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph may
produce significant areas of blowing and drifting snow. Area
roads may become quite slushy with low visibility due to the
blowing snow.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

I was just thinking about that storm in '83, and remembered it may have only been Johnson county he was talking about, but I think he said both Johnson and Sheridan county...
Just thought I would clarify that... I will have to do some digging and see if I can find it online...

My husband is driving from North Dakota now...he is not far from Spearfish. He said he just came through a big blizzard - large flakes, blowing snow. The snow had stopped where he is now. He is on his way to Rawlins.

It must be bad - when I went to the Spearfish web cam - it showed nothing - just blank white screen!! I am on rural dial up today!
