Hey there Tom Deir: The second exit (85) you mention places you in Fort Mill...in fact depending on what direction you are heading on the I77...we use 85 or 88 (Gold Hill Rd) to head to our home in Tega Cay. I am not sure if you are looking to rent or buy..or what your price range is....but I am rather partial to Tega Cay ...second choice would be Fort Mill....then Rock Hill (this takes into account.... safety, proximity to the grandkids and other factors). I usually suggest that people check the stats on this site, and/or call..or find the website for the local police department . I've made some previous comments on this site regarding the areas mentioned above (that can be found if you use the search mode that is located above). Also another suggestion would be to look at the local papers: Herald (daily...based in Rock Hill), Fort Mill Times (weekly), or the Charlotte Observer....all are online. Hope this helps a little and if you happen to have any other questions feel free to ask away.

Hi there, not sure if your going to see this or not so I'm make it brief. We moved here in Feb this year from Orange County, CA. We were originally from Upstate NY and DH's family relocated down here 14 yrs ago and we wanted to be closer to them. They settled in Rock Hill so we chose here. We looked at tons of homes around the area and bought a 3 yr old Ryland Home between Dave Lyle and Anderson. I love the area because it is close to the freeway, shopping, etc. We have a 4th grader and I'm not thrilled with the public school in our district so I'm going to look into another public school. The home prices are still pretty low here (esp coming from CA). Our neighbors are awesome and DS has tons of new friends to play outside with. I commute into Charlotte but only exit 2(12 miles from me). Most of the bigger companies are in the Uptown or Ballyntyne area abut to me, traffic is no where near congested as Orange County. DH is having a hard time finding a job here as the job market (he is in mortgage/banking) is not as lucrative here. I was fortunate to find something (Accounting) right away. Overall, I'm very happy with the move (I never really thought of CA as home). I love our twice as big house for 1/3 the price and the area we chose. Best of luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

You are correct there are some great homes there (we have friends that live there) but Rock Hill also has a high percentage of rental homes. If you go far enough out you can find homes with acreage...which would not be a bad thing as long as you did not have to commute into Charlotte (it would be a ways to get to the 77) but I do know people do it. There are also some areas that need some improvement...and the city council has alot of internal bickering back and forth. On a brighter note there is some great shopping and eating there and Rock Hill is the home of Winthrop University.
Hi there lovethecarolinas. Just moved here from Pa and will be closing on a home in Rock Hill the end of the month. I have so enjoyed reading your info on Rock Hill. Was wondering if you had any experience with painters in the area? Got one name off of this site and was wondering if you have worked with either a painter or a handyman who does painting? Thanks for any help you can give.

The other street you are referring to is Dave Lyle (named after a local developer) and does give off a very nice impression. When it comes to Rock Hill it is the largest city in York County...so with that comes alot of everything (good, bad, developed, rural, etc.). You don't mention where the area is you are looking at in Rock Hill or where your kids have moved to....if you don't mind sharing as I am a little curious.
We now reside in Mooresville, NC and love it......I work at the golf course and I am in heaven....thanks for your input

Tom
