34. MT. LAUREL HARVEST FESTIVAL

City: Birmingham, AL
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Telephone: (205) 408-8696

Description: Located on Country Road 41 just south of Double Oak Mountain, Mt. Laurel is a self-contained, planned New Urbanist community with schools, restaurants, shops, and businesses all within a short walking distance from each other. Planned as an antidote to modern sprawl, Mt. Laurel has its own 25-acre organic farm, and the Harvest Festival is a chance to show off their farmers’ market, restaurants, local artisans, and shops. Look for fresh cabbage, broccoli, winter squash, and if the weather’s right, maybe even some late-fall tomatoes hanging on in Alabama’s warm climate. Kids will enjoy the usual run of fun inflatable playgrounds, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and other activities. Look for the corresponding spring festival in Apr. Admission is free.

35. MOSS ROCK FESTIVAL

City: Birmingham, AL
Category: Annual Events & Festivals

Description: With 15,000 visitors the Moss Rock Festival has continued to grow each year since its inception in 2005. With artwork, green living ideas, products and services, live music, delicious food, geocaching, fuel-efficient car exhibitions, and more, Moss Rock is the festival for those concerned with the environment and their place in it. Indeed, the eco-ideas on LEED certification, recycling, and the many green exhibitors makes the festival a fun and informative alternative to just another great cultural event. For parents, your children will not even know they are learning something about their environment: They’ll just be having fun. Parking and free shuttle bus service is available in the nearby Regions Park (6000 Stadium Trace, Hoover). Admission is free.

The November 11th parade, which has as many as 5,000 participants, typically centers on a 1.5-mile route that includes 20th Street North and surrounding blocks and features veteran organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, military units, and various marching bands and school groups. People march, walk, and ride on cars and float while residents line the parade route to honor veterans past and present. It’s an event that draws school children from all over the city and suburbs to join in celebrating our nation’s veterans as only Birmingham does.

39. JINGLE BELL RUN/WALK FOR ARTHRITIS

City: Birmingham, AL
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Telephone: (800) 283-7800

Description: One of many such events across the country, the Jingle Bell Run/Walk is a fun and festive 5K and one-mile fun run fit for the whole family. In fact, the sillier your Christmas costume—think reindeer antlers, jingling bells, and Santa Claus hats for starts—the better. The popular Santa Chase is a 100-yard dash for children 12 and under. The race starts and finishes at Underwood Park, located on the Southside behind St. Vincent’s Hospital on 26th Street South and 10th Avenue South. Registration starts at $30. The Santa Chase is $25. But don’t let that stop you from forming your own fundraising/racing team to raise as much money as you can to support the Arthritis Foundation.
