Description: Appropriately enough, the Southern Museum of Flight resides on the property of the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. It houses some of the world’s most unique aircraft, and everyone from children to grandparents will be entranced by the power of flight. Established by the Birmingham Aero Club in 1965, the museum features artifacts from every American war since the dawn of aviation as well as special exhibits on the Tuskegee Airmen, Korean War jets, and Vietnam War helicopters. In addition to the various aircrafts, the museum is also home to the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame, a site dedicated to honoring the men and women from the state who have made great strides in flight.

Consequently, the gallery offers art ranging from $100 to $5,000. The gallery lives up to its name—part of it was, in fact, an alley between two buildings before a facade and roof were added. Whether you’re looking for something in particular or just browsing, there’s a good chance Art Alley has it—or can get it.

Description: Featuring over 2,500 works in various styles, media, and themes from artists everywhere from Peru to Russia, the Griffith Art Gallery is one of Birmingham’s most comprehensive art galleries. The ground floor contains 3,000 square feet of art on display while upstairs there are more than 10,000 frames for sale, many of which were designed by the Griffiths and incorporate antique materials. Open since 1987 the gallery specializes in original oil and acrylic paintings. Twin brothers Rick and Dave Griffith provide local and regional art aficionados with hard-to-find works to adorn their homes and offices. The sheer volume of art at hand can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re looking for something in particular, call Rick or Dave and if they don’t have it, they can probably find it.
