Description: This 18-hole course rolls and dips through the northern Pine Creek neighborhood drainage area and can be quite challenging. With upscale homes surrounding the course and glorious views of Pikes Peak and the US Air Force Academy, this is one of the more scenic courses around. Green fees are $20 to $44, and driving carts are available for an additional fee. Walking is allowed, and the usual golf dress code of collared shirt and jeans in good repair applies. There is a pro shop, restaurant, and driving range, and lessons are available.

Description: Springs Ranch lies east of Powers Boulevard and is open and scenic, with wide views of the Front Range. The rolling hills and creek basin make this 18-hole course a surprisingly challenging game, with a lot to offer in terms of shot-making decisions. Green fees are $17 to $52, and rolling and push carts are available for rental. Walking is allowed. Driving range, lessons, leagues, tournaments, restaurant, and pro shop are available. Punch cards and other passes give regular, local players a range of discounts.

Description: The second municipal course in the city, Valley Hi is an 18-hole course that appears flat and innocuous but can be surprising. Challenging bunkers and tall, mature trees line the fairways. Green fees are $14 to $30, and both push carts and riding carts are available for rent. You may walk. Lessons and leagues are offered, and there’s a pro shop and the Caddy Shack restaurant.

Description: Honnen is on the Colorado College campus, but it is not restricted to students. There are public skates, figure skating sessions, open hockey times, and learn-to-skate classes. Skate rentals are available. This rink can be a little tricky to find just west of the intersection of Cascade Avenue and Cache La Poudre Street, up a short walkway to the north.

Description: Sertich is in Memorial Park at the corner of East Pikes Peak Avenue and Union Boulevard. The NHL-size ice also has seating for 2,000, and as such this is a popular place for high school hockey games. There are public skating sessions, a good selection of rental skates, learn-to-skate classes, youth hockey classes, and adult open hockey sessions. Sertich also has a birthday party package, a video game room, skate sharpening, and full-service vending machines, including that all-important hot chocolate.

Description: The World Arena Ice Hall is next to the 8,000-seat World Arena, and it is the big player in ice time in Colorado Springs. The World Arena Ice Hall houses 2 sheets of ice (1 NHL size, 1 Olympic size). The facility hosts world-class athletes at all hours every day as well as public skate sessions, youth and adult hockey leagues, drop-in speedskating, learn-to-skate lessons, private lessons, and is home to the Broadmoor Skating Club (past and present members are US National and Olympic champion figure skaters). Skate rental is available. There is a snack bar, but it is not always open; when it’s closed vending machines dole out coffee and hot chocolate. Make sure to check the website or call before heading over as the ice is booked every day from before dawn to almost midnight.

Description: UCCS plays NCAA Division II, and a number of sports draw a crowd. The men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams play in the new 1,200-seat Gallogly Events Center. Tickets and information are available at the website. Tickets are either free or up to $6.

40. Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Description: This high altitude road race is a little challenging as a spectator sport since you see the cars zoom by only once, but gear-heads love it. The 12.42-mile course begins at 9,390 feet above sea level and ends at 14,110 feet, at the summit of Pikes Peak. There are 11 classes featuring every type of automobile, from semi trucks to open wheels to motorcycles. Spectators line the road-turned-race track from the bottom to the top, getting a day spent in the mountains as part of the package. Tickets are $45.

41. Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo

Description: One of the highest-paying pro rodeo events in the country, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo runs for five days in the height of summer. This perfect family outing features all the excitement of the Old West as well as a carnival and activities like pony rides, gold panning, and mutton busting. In the arena, barrel racers to bull riders take the audience on a thrill ride. Those wacky daredevils, the hard-working rodeo clowns, almost always steal the show. Tickets range from about $5 to $25.

Description: The Colorado Springs Sky Sox are the Triple-A farm club for the Major League Baseball Colorado Rockies. On any given summer day, you can enjoy a dog and soda while watching big league players sent down to work out some kinks, new whiz kids out to prove themselves, and a field full of big league hopefuls. The intimate, open, 8,500-seat Security Service Field is the highest professional ballpark in the US at 6,531 feet above sea level, and every seat is perfect. The Sky Sox routinely run promotions that allow families to enjoy a day at the park for next to nothing. All together now, “Take me out to the ball game. . . .” Tickets range from $9 to $12, but there are discounted promotions on a regular basis.
