The colonial revival structure contains artwork from all around the world and a Waterford chandelier that once hung in the White House. 22. Colorado State Capitol

City: Denver, CO
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (303) 866-2604

Description: The Colorado State Capitol stands exactly 1 mile above sea level. On the 13th step there’s a carving stating the elevation as 5,280 feet, but a small brass plaque on the 18th step corrects the carving and proclaims itself the true mile-high marker. Inside the capitol building, free tours lasting about 45 minutes are given Monday through Friday. Due to heightened security, there is no public access to the gold-plated dome. Although the gold on the outside of the dome tends to receive more attention from the casual passersby, the real precious mineral is on the inside of the building, where rose-colored Colorado onyx was used as wainscoting. The onyx came from a small quarry in Beulah, Colorado, and has never been mined elsewhere.

23. Cussler Museum

City: Denver, CO

Address: 14959 W. 69th Ave.

Among the rarest are the foreign cars—a 1929 Isotta Fraschini and a 1936 Avions Voisins, for example. Cussler found ways to write many of the vehicles into his Dirk Pitt novels, and he often posed with them for the book jacket photos. Today the collection is tended by his daughter and open to the public Monday and Tuesday May through September.
