Description: On about 20 acres near Groton sits a collection of unusual stone sites that puzzles researchers enough so that various conspiracy-type theories have sprung up about it. Most think the location is merely a Native American site that was later used by colonial farmers for sheep rearing. This is supported by archaeological research. However, the area is fascinating nevertheless, with an “Indian cave,” a huge three-sided colonial foundation, the remains of a number of underground chambers (possibly for icehouses or sheep tanning), stone bridges, and the row of small standing stones that caused all the controversy in the first place. Access is limited and you’ll need a guide, so call the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center for their schedule of tours. But it’s worth the trouble—this is a mystery begging to be solved. Although maybe it’s better that some mysteries are left as they are. It’s more fun that way.
