The Skyway - Getting Here, Getting Around - Jacksonville, Florida

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Getting Here, Getting Around

Description: The Skyway, the city’s elevated, electrified monorail transit system, services eight stations on both sides of the St. Johns River. The Skyway operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday only for special-event service, such as Jaguars football games. Stations are continually monitored by closed-circuit television, and all vehicles have two-way voice communications with interior video recordings. Stations and vehicles are fully accessible to the disabled. While the Skyway has never really caught on as a commuter option, mostly because it does not reach throughout the city, it still provides a pleasant way to travel to the Prime Osborn Convention Center and Hemming Plaza (where City Hall and the Federal Courthouse are located). From Downtown, ride it across the St. Johns River to San Marco Station, where it’s an easy walk to the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) and Friendship Park Riverwalk. There’s also a stop near the Southbank’s hotels. The final stop provides easy access to the Charthouse restaurant and Morton’s, The Steakhouse. On Jaguar game days, the Skyway is free for the three hours before kickoff and two hours after the game. The Skyway fare for non-monthly commuters is 50 cents, and 10 cents for the elderly and disabled.
