Description: La Gaceta has printed more history on its pages than most other weekly newspapers in the Tampa Bay area. In 1922, Victoriano Manteiga, a lector or reader in the Ybor City cigar factories, began publishing a Spanish-language newspaper for the area. But the content wasn’t confined to happenings around Ybor City or even just in Tampa. La Gaceta’s readers had international ties and so international news was part of its pages. In the 1940s English, and then Italian, news and columns were added, making it the nation’s only trilingual newspaper for many years. Today, the paper’s editor and publisher is Patrick Manteiga, grandson of the founder.
