32. Phoenix Shot Tower

City: Baltimore, MD
Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: 801 East Fayette St.

Description: The Phoenix Shot Tower was constructed in 1828 where, as the name suggests, lead shot ammunition was made. Molten lead was poured through colanders at the top of the shaft, fragmenting into pieces, which became round before falling into vats of water to cool. This 234-foot structure, which was in use until 1892, was the tallest building in the United States until 1846. Through a light and sound show, you learn how the shot was made for pistols, rifles, and even larger molded shot for cannons. No, you aren’t allowed to climb inside and it isn’t air-conditioned so it can get quite warm in summer. This is one of a handful remaining shot towers in the country. The others are in Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut.
