Description: Moses Sheppard bequeathed his entire estate to start the Sheppard Asylum in 1862. Several years later, Enoch Pratt, who gave more than $1 million to create the free library in Baltimore bearing his name, asked that the 322-bed facility be changed to the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital after giving $1.6 million to complete the building. Today, the facility provides inpatient and outpatient behavior health, addiction services, crisis intervention, special education schools, and employee assistance programs. Through a partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center, the facility operates a fellowship program in child and adolescent psychiatry. Its alcohol and drug addiction services have drawn notables from all over the world who seek help at the sprawling campus in Towson in anonymity. Sheppard Pratt employs 2,100 people and has programs in numerous counties of Maryland and Prince William County, Virginia. The Towson campus is home to several unique art and history installations with the works of nearly 100 professionally trained artists whose life experiences have been impacted by mental illness or addiction.
