Description: Camels, anyone? The Desert of Maine doesn’t actually have any camels, but they’d feel comfortable in this 300-acre Freeport oddity. Ages of overgrazing and a sandy, arid substratum have turned this old farm into a veritable desert of giant dunes. There are guided safaris of the area on the half hour, but you’re welcome to explore the walking trails through the desert on your own. On a hot summer day, you’d swear you were in the Sahara (except for all the pine trees that surround). There are a gift shop, picnic area, and convenience store here where you can learn more about this freakish oasis. Kids love the place, and parents usually find it unusual enough to be worthwhile. Open from early May through mid-October. Children 4 and under free.
