Description: Hamline University is Minnesota’s oldest university. The United Methodist Church organized the school in 1854 in Red Wing. Shortly thereafter, it relocated 50 miles north to its present site in St. Paul. Hamline was the third coeducational college in the United States. The cornerstone of Hamline’s curriculum is liberal arts. Hamline offers degrees and majors in numerous areas of study. Undergraduate bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts disciplines are the most popular certificates granted. Also conferred are master’s, doctoral, and law degrees. The campus is composed of approximately 4,900 undergrad and graduate students in areas of study ranging from art history to women’s studies. The university offers over 40 undergraduate majors. Besides the Hamline Law School, there are several additional graduate programs: the Graduate School of Education and the Graduate School of Liberal Studies, including M.A.s in Teaching English as a Second Language and M.F.A.s in Writing.
