Description: Hidden behind a plain storefront in the heart of St. Paul’s residential Mac-Groveland neighborhood, Heartland is a special place, serving dishes with ingredients from the Midwest and south-central Canada. Whenever possible, the chefs purchase organic or naturally raised foods from small family farmers. The menu changes nightly and includes two fixed-price full meals, as well as many a la carte items. Examples of dishes the restaurant has served include a sherried-rabbit consommé with pork-rabbit meatballs and locally picked wild king bolete mushrooms; wild-leek-crusted lake cisco with cherry-tomato relish, baby Pontiac onions, and Wisconsin crayfish cream; and a Yorkshire pork chop with braised Michihili cabbage, spiced watermelon reduction, and roasted local apples. The extensive wine list allows diners to choose the perfect complement to their meal. The Arts and Crafts–style dining room and food preparation area on the dining room floor, as well as the Heartland’s elegant wine bar, all add up to one of the nicest dining experiences in the Twin Cities.
