Description: Fort Ancient is more than just the museum. The 100-acre park features prehistoric earthworks and remains of village sites built by the ancient Hopewell Indian tribe and other Native Americans since the Ice Age. The circular mounds were used as a sort of sundial calendar. The museum illustrates the religion, culture, and customs of the prehistoric Hopewell people. Picnic facilities and hiking trails are available to help make this a well-rounded day trip.The park is open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Closed October through March. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Ohio Historical Society members get in free.

Description: Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in Cincinnati for 19 years, and it is here that she became familiar with the concept of slavery and formulated the thoughts and experiences that led to the writing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The home where she lived for a short time features family pictures and copies of her journal and manuscripts. Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. by appointment only. Donations are accepted.

48. Sharon Woods Park and Heritage Village

Description: A 19th-century village has been re-created here, with nine buildings, including a train station, a doctor’s office, a church, and a jail. All of the buildings are furnished with 19th-century Ohio-made furniture and decorations. The village is open Wednesday through Saturday noon to 4:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday May through October. The village is decorated for Christmas each December and open on weekends during November and December. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors age 65 and older, and $5 for children ages 6 through 12. Take I-275 east off I-75, or west off I-71 to U.S. Highway 42; go south a mile to the park entrance.

Description: Artist John Ruthven renovated the two-story boyhood home of our 18th president. It is now owned by the state of Ohio. Memorabilia and period furnishings are displayed throughout. The home is open Wednesday through Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day and noon to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in September and October.

Description: The only museum devoted to Northern Kentucky’s natural and cultural heritage, Behringer-Crawford boasts a fascinating collection of fossils and artifacts spanning 450 million years of history. There are also the Garden Railway train cars collected by a local model-train enthusiast. The museum sits atop Devou Park, which has a terrific playground and a sweeping vista of the Ohio River and Cincinnati skyline that’s worth a trip in itself. A recently added hall allows space for traveling exhibitions. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends. The museum is closed Monday and holidays. Call ahead for schedules of special hands-on programs for kids.

Description: No family with a budding firefighter should miss this restored, century-old firehouse. The museum features firefighting memorabilia and antique engines. Ring the fire bell, see a movie, and visit the safe house for fire prevention tips. And where else can junior get a chance to slide down a real fire pole or climb inside the cab of a modern fire truck that allows him (or her) to operate the sirens and lights? Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4:00 p.m. weekends. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 2 through 12, and $5 for seniors ages 65 and older.

Description: The oldest fully operational observatory in the nation (since circa 1845), the Cincinnati Observatory Center is nonetheless a hidden treasure. The stately domed structure—where the National Weather Service boasts its origins—sits majestically atop Mount Lookout. Since an enthusiastic nonprofit group took over the facility from the University of Cincinnati in 1999, even more people are discovering the wonders of the observatory. Tours and children’s programs are available, but you need to call first. The observatory opens at dusk on Thursday and Friday nights.

Description: Formerly known as the Turtle Creek Railway, the railway continues to offer an hour-long train ride through the beautiful rolling countryside of southwest Ohio. Theme trips, including Santa rides, mystery dinners, and ice-cream socials, are also available. Trains run Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday April through October. Only weekend Santa rides are available in November and December. Trains depart at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Fare is $17 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and under.

Description: The 15,000-square-foot Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame Museum pays tribute to the greats who pioneered the game here as well as those who contributed to the success of the Big Red Machine in the 20th century. Off-season hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., closed Monday between January 1 and opening day (which is in late March or early April). After opening day, game-day hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily; admission is $5 with game ticket. Non-game-day hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily; admission is $8, $6 seniors, $5 children.
