Description: Artillery Ridge, which is open April through November and located about a mile south of town on Route 134 (Taneytown Road), is the home of both the National Riding Stables (see the Gettysburg National Military Park chapter) and the Gettysburg Miniature Battlefield Diorama (see the Attractions chapter). Here you’ll find 135 hookup sites, 45 nonhookup sites, and 3 cabins to rent. If you have access to the Internet, the Web site has a great map of the campground. Rates are for two people at one camping site. A site without hookups is $31 a night or $186 a week. If you want a site with water and electric, the cost is $39 a night or $234 a week. If you also want sewer hookup, the price is $42 a night or $252 a week. There are large open tenting grounds with some secluded sites, and every tent site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Internet access is available. The log cabins sleep either four or six persons and include a ceiling fan, air-conditioning, electricity, an outside water tap, a porch and chairs, a picnic table and fire ring, and a driveway. The four-person cabin has a double bed and a set of twin bunk beds while the six-person cabin has a queen-size bed and two sets of bunk beds. Cooking and pets are prohibited within the cabins. The four-person cabin rents for $57.00 a night, and the six-person cabin runs $79.50 per night. Since this is also the site of the National Riding Stables, you can bring your own horse or rent one. The campground offers a two-hour battlefield tour on horseback that covers the history of the three-day battle (see the Attractions chapter for details). Recreational activities here include fishing (no license required) or paddleboating on the property’s pond and playing horseshoes, basketball, or volleyball. There are also pony rides for the little ones and church services on Sunday. You might find bingo being played at the pavilion or maybe you’d rather catch that night’s movie. And be sure to check out the planned activities if you’re staying over the weekend—maybe you’ll take a hayride, attend an ice-cream social, or lose yourself in a Western- or 1950s-themed weekend.
