61. Port Royal / Barony Course

Description: The long drivers will take a backseat to the shot makers on this 6,223-yard course, which has many small greens. The Barony, which was designed by George Cobb, presents players with a test of skill at No. 12, a par-4, 411-yard hole with water on both sides of the fairway.

62. Port Royal/Planter’S Row Course

Description: Willard Byrd was the designer responsible for Planter’s Row, where golfers finish on a par-5, 511-yard hole featuring woods and water. If that’s not enough of a challenge, consider No. 12, a narrow, 419-yard hole where you’ve got to cross water to get to the green. The course measures 6,284 yards, and par is 72.

63. Port Royal/Robber’S Row Course

Description: Robber’s Row represents a team effort by designers George Cobb and Pete Dye. The course was built in 1967 and reconfigured in 1994 by Dye, who added several water hazards. This par-72 course runs 6,311 yards.

Description: The signature hole at Harbour Town is the one you’ve seen countless times on television—the windswept 18th, a par 4 on Calibogue Sound where shots to the green often end up among the fiddler crabs in the adjacent marsh. Consistently ranked among the world’s top courses, this one was designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus and has some outstanding par 3s. The yardage at this par-71 course totals 6,040. Greens fees run $250, however, realize that this is one of the country’s premier and challenging courses, so expect pricey fees.

Description: The 15th hole on this oldest and newest of island courses offers a terrific view of the ocean. It’s the oldest course because it was designed by George Cobb in 1962 and was remodeled by Mark McCumber in 1995. Greens fees for this par- 72, 6,172-yard layout run $114.

Description: You’ll encounter wide fairways and lots of lagoons, trees, and marshes when you play this par-72 course, which was redesigned by Pete Dye and reopened after a year of work in September 2007. The previous name was Sea Marsh. Greens fees are as follows: Aug 1 through Sept 19, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., $83; Sept 20 to Nov. 28, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., $98; Nov. 29 through March 6, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., $70.

68. Shipyard Golf Club (Public)

Description: Shipyard offers three interconnecting 9-hole courses appropriately named for three types of sailing vessels: Brigantine, Clipper, and Galleon. There is water involved on 25 of the 27 holes, which have Bermuda grass fairways and greens. There’s a bar and restaurant on the premises. Greens fees are $90 in the morning, $60 after noon, and $45 after 2 p.m.

Description: The work of designer Willard Byrd, the Brigantine is a 3,054-yard, par 36 surrounded by private homes and rental condominiums that blend in with the natural environment. You’ll be challenged by No. 6, a long par 4; and No. 9, which is a par 5 that runs 494 yards and has water on one side of the fairway. Resort rates during summer months are as follows: $105 in the morning, $80 after 11 a.m.; $63 after 1 a.m., and $50 after 3 p.m. The nine-hole rate is $40.

Description: The 3,302-yard Clipper has a tough 9th hole with lots of bunkers. Water comes into play on all the holes except No. 6, which is a par 4, 415-yarder. George Cobb also designed this course, which carries a par 36. Resort rates during summer months are as follows: $105 in the morning, $80 after 11 a.m.; $63 after 1 a.m., and $50 after 3 p.m. The nine-hole rate is $40.

Description: The Shipyard Golf Club consists of three 18-hole golf courses that have interconnecting nines. The Clipper/Galleon Course is the larges of the three. The greens are large and well bunkered. This George Cobb–designed, par-36 course is best known for No. 2, a par 5 with an elevated green fronted by water and with bunkers all around. Total yardage for the course is 3,146. Resort rates during summer months are as follows: $105 in the morning, $80 after 11 a.m.; $63 after 1 a.m., and $50 after 3 p.m. The nine-hole rate is $40.

Description: An array of instructional programs and daily round-robin tournaments are featured at the tennis center at Palmetto Dunes. The tournaments are billed as “lively afternoon social competition with the emphasis on fun.” There are 23 clay and 2 Pro Bounce (a cushioned hard surface) courts, 8 of which are lighted.Reserved rates are $25 for Palmetto Dunes’ guests and $30 for players not staying at the resort. Walk-on rates (noon to 4 p.m.) are $20 from noon to 4 p.m.

Description: The Port Royal Racquet Club is the only tennis facility on Hilton Head—and in all of South Carolina, for that matter—offering all three Grand Slam–type playing surfaces. The club offers a variety of instructional programs and will custom design clinics for individuals and teams.Located at Port Royal Plantation, the club has a well-stocked pro shop that provides a varied selection of men’s and women’s tennis wear and the latest in equipment.
