Description: Apple Valley Farms is an operational apple farm in Sevierville that has grown into an immensely popular tourist stop. Besides sporting two full-service restaurants, it’s also home to the Apple Barn General Store and Cider Mill, the Apple Butter Kitchen, the Candy Apple and Chocolate Factory, the Creamery, the Apple Barn Winery, and the Christmas and Candle shop. (See the Close-up in the Shopping chapter for more details). The two restaurants—Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and the newer Applewood Farmhouse Grill—have similar menus, so this write-up will focus on the original Farmhouse Restaurant before including a few distinguishing facts about the newer Farmhouse Grill. The restaurant is located in what was once an actual farmhouse, built in 1921. It was refurbished and opened as a restaurant in 1987. The building has retained much of its original charm. A friendly, whitewashed exterior welcomes you into a world of country simplicity. Inside, you’ll find wood floors and big windows offering views of the rest of the Apple Valley complex and the lazy Little Pigeon River just beyond. As you might well expect, the apple reigns supreme here, and you’ll get plenty of apple-licious side dishes whenever you visit, whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Traditional breakfast favorites include omelets, pancakes, eggs, and biscuits. Big appetites appreciate the Farmhouse Special Breakfast, featuring your choice of eight different main items, including bacon, country ham hash, and even rainbow trout. Each main dish comes with an Applewood julep, applesauce muffins, apple fritters, homemade apple butter, biscuits, fried apples, grits and sausage gravy, home-fried potatoes, and two eggs cooked to order. Lunches and dinners (in generous portions) are also loaded with extras but include a few different side dishes, like homemade vegetable soup, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable. As for the entrees, some of the “Farmhouse Favorites” include Southern fried chicken, old-fashioned chicken and dumplings, chicken potpie, and applewood pork loin (a tender, boneless pork loin smoked over applewood and served with homemade apple relish). Next door, the Applewood Farmhouse Grill was opened in 1995. Although the construction is newer, it was designed to resemble its older sister. The breakfast and lunch menus are very similar to those of the original restaurant, but side salads and desserts are not included in the price of the dinners as they are at Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant. Overall, however, the prices on the dinner menu are a little less expensive. Both restaurants have a reasonably priced children’s menu with kids’ favorites like grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, bologna and cheese sandwiches, and fried chicken.
