Restaurants - Hampton Roads, Virginia

Restaurants

Hampton Roads is in the South, but food wise it is far from a Southern city. Sure, if you search, you can find plenty of places dishing up grits and red-eye gravy, but that’s not what we’re noted for. Here, seafood is king. And why not? The Chesapeake Bay is the world’s greatest estuary, a sanctuary and incubator for just about anything that swims. And when those fry mature, they head right out to the nearby Atlantic, where the parallel conveyor belts of the warm Gulf Stream and the cold Labrador Current ensure there’s always lots to eat and no real reason for fish to migrate out of the reach of our watermen.

Overview

Not a fish eater? Don’t despair. You can enjoy our many barbecue joints; in fact, you can pick between two local styles: Virginia barbecue sauce is red, rich, and tangy, while North Carolina makes its version nearly clear and heavy on vinegar and pepper flakes. Both states insist that barbecue means pork, slow roasted in smoky ovens over real hardwood. You can barbecue beef, they say, but that’s why you buy a backyard grill.

There’s also a diversity of dining few other Southern cities can boast. It comes from hundreds of years of military forces rotating in and out to local bases and bringing their local appetites and demand for the foods they left behind. So you’ll find Philly cheesesteaks served on authentic Amoroso rolls trucked in from the Philadelphia bakery. The better Italian restaurants get their supplies directly from New York City’s Little Italy.

Love Filipino food? There’s a huge community here, thanks to the Navy. The same with Thai and other ethnic specialties.

Bottom line: if you hanker for some type of food, there’s probably a place here that makes it, and makes it well. And if there’s a national chain, you can bet it has outlets here. I won’t spend lots of time on those, since you’re probably familiar with their offerings. Instead, what follows are the local gems that keep us coming back.

In each listing you’ll see a $ code. It’s the Insider guide to relative pricing based on the cost of an average dinner for two, minus desert or alcoholic beverages. Of course, it should go without saying that things change. The restaurant business is very volatile. Chefs bounce between eateries, changing items or even entire menus. Places, even landmarks, close or change hands. So be sure to call before driving across the region.

So enough with the preliminaries. Here are the best, broken down into neighborhoods and then genres.

1. Zoe’S

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 437-3636

Description: This is the beloved Zoe’s second incarnation, and Hampton Roads Magazine voted it the region’s best restaurant of any type in 2010 with a nearly perfect score by its judges. Here, you can watch chef Jerry Weihbrecht, who cooked at the James Beard House in NYC, whip up his special Blue Crab Mac-n-Cheese creation in the open-style kitchen.

2. The Beach Bully

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 422-4222

Description: This restaurant got its start at local outdoor festivals. The owners began with charcoal grills and frozen hamburgers, but soon moved to pulled pork and then beef, which is now the basis for the signature Beach Bully sandwich. They moved from a smaller location at the Oceanfront to their current one between the Atlantic and the Virginia Beach Convention Center. They still cater, by the way. The menu features barbecue chicken, pork and beef ribs and beef brisket in addition to their sandwich, as well as grilled tuna for those who want the surf experience.

3. Taste Unlimited

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 422-3399

Description: This locally owned chain specializes in gourmet food items and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread with secret house dressings. Their motto is “Taste the Good Life,” and their sandwiches live up to it. The offerings range from crab cake to a vegetarian sandwich known as the Princess Anne, Surry ham to curried chicken salad. Or you can mix and match any of their ingredients to make your own creation. And while you’re in the store, check out one of their weekly free wine tastings. Two other Virginia Beach locations are at 4097 Shore Dr., (757) 464-1566 and Hilltop West Shopping Center, (757) 425-1858.

4. Zero’S Subs

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants

Description: This regional fast-food franchise got its start in Virginia Beach in 1967 with the idea that subs would taste a lot better if you baked them just before serving. They take good ingredients, put them together, and then place the sandwiches on a conveyor that pulls them through a super hot oven. The result is melted cheese and accentuated flavors. They also use the oven to make pizzas and offer wings, salads, and wraps. There are now 40 stores in nine states and franchises in China and New Zealand. In Hampton Roads you can find 5 restaurants in Chesapeake, 3 in Hampton, 4 in Norfolk, 1 each in Portsmouth and Suffolk, and 10 in their birthplace of Virginia Beach.

5. Shogun Japanese Steakhouse

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 422-5150

Description: Another longtime local hibachi steakhouse and sushi restaurant, Shogun has been around for more than 20 years and has been voted Best in the Beach by The Virginian-Pilot’s readers for 17 of them. Don’t judge this place by its façade.

6. Guadalajara Mexican Cantina

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 433-0140

Description: A favorite that has been sprouting locations here since 1997, this is a more upscale Mexican eatery with a different feel at each of the restaurants. The Oceanfront store (200 21st St.) is casual, with a patio to enjoy the ocean breezes. The tropical cafe (2149 General Booth Blvd., 757-563-2926) has a Miami and Caribbean feel. The City Cafe in Norfolk (411 Granby St., 757-622-2489) has a New York vibe complete with sidewalk dining. And the Town Center restaurant on Columbus Street (4611 Columbus St., 757-493-8696) in Virginia Beach’s “downtown” is glitzy, with fiber-optic bars that transforms into a dance venue after 10 p.m. on Fri and Sat. Other locations: 2272 West Great Neck Rd., (757) 481-5511 and 509 Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center, (757) 491-1613.

City: Hampton Roads, VA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (757) 422-0081
