Description: The focus here, in the Pattern Building on the 8.3-acre historic Tredegar site, next to the American Civil War Center, is Richmond’s role in the Civil War, primarily in relation to the seven engagements that took place on the surrounding battlefields. This three-story center orients visitors to the war in this region and offers much information and advice for those who want to drive around the surrounding Civil War battlefields and sites. By spring 2011 the visitor experience will change, and the entrance to the building will be on the first floor, where there will be ticketing, orientation, exhibits, and a bookstore all done in concert with the American Civil War Center. The second floor, with its large battlefield and campaign maps, is a must-see for those who want a more in-depth understanding of where the major battles for the prize of Richmond were and how best to visit the sites. Take the opportunity to ask questions of a National Park Service ranger. These people know their stuff and will vastly improve the quality of your visit. The third floor will house the orientation film that previously was on the first floor and will continue to display the moving multimedia exhibit, Richmond Speaks. Take the time to hear the words of those who lived or passed through Richmond during and after the war. The site is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Buy the Civil War pass for free parking at the site and admission to the American Civil War Center and the Museum and White House of the Confederacy. Admission is free.
