Description: Seattle has one of the largest annual Martin Luther King Day celebrations in the United States. The central celebration of Dr. King and his work begins with the parade from 4th Avenue and Pine downtown, starting at 11 a.m. The MLK Celebration Committee holds a march (usually starting at Garfield High School), with rallies before and after. During the day, various workshops are held on issues such as homelessness, HIV and health care, education, race and gender, housing, and others. At Seattle Center, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration honors Dr. King’s dream by promoting the principles of peace, unity, and equality, providing an opportunity for Seattle citizens to remember his dream and vision, and recognizing citizens who are energizing the MLK dream in their communities. A full afternoon of awards, activities, and entertainment included glee clubs, vocalists, multicultural dances, peace awards, and more. Throughout the city many service projects and other commemorations are going on as well. Most events are free.
