The Galeville Grocery building was originally the headquarters of the Thomas Gale Salt Company. It is one of the oldest surviving wood framed structures in Central NY. In the mid 1800's, this area was the largest producer of salt in the country, and since there was no refridgeration, salt was a very important commodity for the preservation of food. Part of the building also served as a church at one time. A grocery store serving the local community and travelers has been in operation continuously since at least 1888. The store has been operated by the current family for over 50 years. Galeville Grocery has been the focal point of this community during this time, actively supporting local churches, sports and other organizations. The store has been the first employer of countless young people, providing valuable lessons about honesty and service that will benefit them in their careers. It has met the needs of people on happy events: weddings, births, graduations, as well as helping to comfort in times of sorrow. During storms, blizzards and blackouts, the store has been there to help people get what they need to survive the emergency. With the continued support of our customers, Galeville Grocery will remain a unique and valuable asset to the community.
