  • I learned how to paint as a child growing up, as my father and I would paint some of our three story victorian house on High St. in Amherst, MA. every year. I started Bob Peters Painting when I was in graduate school at the University of Massachusetts, in 1985. I had been painting with other painting contractors for a number of years in the summers. While I was in graduate school I began painting in Historic Deerfield, where the emphasis on quality work was just like my father had taught me growing up. The other painting contractors that I had worked for did not do the kind of quality work that was required in Historic Deerfield. Historic Deerfield became a regular client, as I painted in the historic village every summer and one winter painted all of the common areas inside of the Deerfield Inn. As I continued to paint in Historic Deerfield, I began to establish a reputation for doing excellent quality work and my business really began to grow. After graduate school I was able to dedicate all of my time to helping Bob Peters Painting to become a well established and reputable painting company. A business philosophy that I embraced when first starting Bob Peters Painting, was an emphasis on customer care and customer satisfaction. I realized that having happy and satisfied customers was the primary objective for my painting company. My goal was to have my customers come up to me at the end of the painting job and tell me how satisfied they were with the results of our work. I also wanted them to thank me for having friendly, courteous and personable employees who were not only easy to get along with but enjoyable to have around day after day while the job was going on. This philosophy is one of the things that differentiates Bob Peters Painting from a lot of the other painting companies. Bob Peters Painting provides quality interior and exterior painting in the areas of residential, commercial and new construction. Our interior painting services include: painting all interior surfaces, drywall repair, plaster repair, fire and water damage restoration, texture removal and application, wallpaper removal, cabinetry refinishing and restoration, floor refinishing, stain wood surfaces, varnish wood surfaces, polyurethane wood surfaces, interior green/low VOC coatings and free interior color consultation. Our exterior painting services include: painting or staining all exterior surfaces, power washing, mildew removal, minor carpentry work, deck refinishing and restoration, fence refinishing and restoration, window glazing, reset loose nails, Graffiti prevention and removal, exterior green/low VOC coatings and free exterior color consultation. There are two keys to getting a particular surface ready to paint. The first is paying very close attention to surface evaluation. It is very important to evaluate how a particular surface will be prepped and treated before any paint is applied to it. Putting finish paint on a glossy surface without adequately preparing it first(de-glossing) will cause adhesion problems where you would probably be able to scrape the paint off with your finger nails. If the surface is dirty or chalky paint will not properly adhere to it. Adhesion problems are the primary cause of peeling and blistering paint. If there are areas on a house where paint is peeling off in sheets or large sections, this is usually a sign of a moisture problem. I have had good success in dealing with moisture problems like this by putting breather spacers/vents underneath the clapboards. This allows a way for winter condensation to escape without having to come through the back of the clapboard, which would cause extensive peeling and blistering of the paint on the outside of the clapboard. The second key to getting a surface ready to paint is by establishing a high quality of preparation. Before putting paint on a surface it must be cleaned, thoroughly scraped and sanded as needed, caulked as needed, putty applied as needed, and all holes filled with the appropriate material. Exterior window sash needs to be prepared in the following way: all window sash will be carefully sanded to close cracks as much as possible, all cracks will then be filled with glazing compound by rubbing it in with fingers and all loose glazing will be removed and replaced with new glazing. I learned this technique for preparation of window sash while painting in Historic Deerfield. It is the attention that Bob Peters Painting gives to preparing a surface to paint that differentiates us from a lot of the other painting companies.
