David Anderson designed and escorted his first safari in 1980 while still working as a management consultant in the healthcare industry. In 1985, he decided to turn in his business suit for a safari vest and change careers and Kenya Nature Safaris was formed. The company was renamed to David Anderson Safaris as the company expanded into Southern Africa in 1989.After Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 and the Gulf war in 1991, tourism dropped by 80% in East Africa and conservation projects suffered greatly as did the loss of jobs in the tourism industry. David Anderson organized the Focus on Africa project in 1992, which involved taking 136 photographers to 8 countries on 25 safaris in 1993 to capture images to promote tourism. The project resulted in a book, Focus on Africa: Wildlife, Conservation, and Man, workshop for travel agents, and a lecture series featuring Dr. Richard Leakey and David Anderson.
